Abstract
India is potentially rich in biomass resources. It is estimated that the quantity of biomass produced in the form of Agricultural residues alone is about 305 million tones. In spite of large biomass available in the villages they are not being properly utilized. In fact a large amount of it is disposed off by burning in open fields causing serious pollution problems. The most efficient utilization of these resources and introduction of appropriate biomass conversion and utilization technologies in the rural areas assumes greater importance. A survey was carried out in Thondamuthur block to assess the utilization pattern and availability of surplus biomass. The study revealed that even though many biomasses are available as surplus, arecanut is one of the major surplus biomass of arecanut industry, which is presently not utilized.
